Selkirk is situated on the Ettrick Water
Selkirk people are known as Souters, which means ‘cobblers’. Turnbull’s Shoe Repairs still do a fine traditional job. Selkirk grew because of its woollen industry. Specialist weavers in town are the Selkirk Weaving Company and Lochcarron which has a coffee shop and visitor centre. The famous Selkirk Bannock is still made locally in traditional ovens.

Famous Sons and Historic Houses
Famous sons of Selkirk include James Hogg, (The Ettrick Shepherd), and Sir Walter Scott whose home at nearby Abbotsford welcomes visitors. Bowhill Estate has exhibitions and activities, and Halliwell Museum gives a feel for Selkirk life in times gone by.

Wonderful for walking and nature
This is an area of rugged landscapes and scenic beauty. The Southern Upland Way and the Sir Walter Scott Way pass nearby and The Three Brethren Walk offers splendid views. The Ettrick and Yarrow Valleys Visitor Guide is a great resource for making the most of the fabulous countryside to the West of Selkirk. For country strolls closer to town The Haining Loch is highly recommended. Philiphaugh has marked walks and you can visit the Salmon Viewing Centre there.

Horsing around in the Borders
Close to town there are riding schools at ISEC, Stable Life, and Broomhill, If you have your own horse, saddle up for a ride around Bowhill Estate or stay for a few days holiday with your horse. Selkirk celebrates its Common Riding festival in June.

Phillipburn Hotel does lunches and fine dining and the nearby Woll Restaurant is well worth a visit. Taste of Spice serves delicious Indian cuisine. For informal eateries try specialist coffee shop Three Hills Coffee. The Waterwheel is just out of town at Philiphaugh. In town are The Courthouse Coffee Shop and Jaz Rose.
