2020 PRE-COVID Property Market Review

Property Market Update  2020 by Ron Hastings

The year has got off to a good start with more buyers around than in previous years.

Could this due to the relatively mild winter and having moved on politically from the uncertainty and distractions caused by Brexit?

  • Sales of mid range and higher value properties have significantly increased and detached houses both in town and in the surrounding countryside having achieved full or beyond asking price.
  • Buyers wanting to move to the Borders from Edinburgh are tending to buy in the Borders first and sell in Edinburgh once they have secured their dream home. Houses tend to sell quickly in the Edinburgh market.
  • Borders properties still offer good value for money so generally buyers from outwith the area are content to pay over home report valuation to secure the right property.
  • With increased demand across the price range and properties selling well in a shortened time frame prices are holding up well and stock levels are at their lowest for years.
Prediction

As of March 5th, it is still too early to make a call about the economic impact and possible restrictions the coronavirus may have on the property market in the months ahead. Thus far it’s been business as usual and if anything we have seen increased activity from prospective purchasers from the cities and the south. Apart from the various attractions of living in the Borders we are truly fortunate to live in a less populated area with plenty of fresh air!
